Three Takeaways from Our Interview with Tom Lydon

Recently I had the opportunity (along with podcast co-host Robyn Murray) to interview my good friend, fellow Babson College alum, and one of the true OGs of the ETF ecosystem, Tom Lydon, for an episode of Invest Well, Be Well. Tom’s knowledge of ETFs is second to none, but what really stood out in our conversation is how he’s thinking about life, career, and well-being. Here are my three takeaways.

1. Embracing the Second Mountain

Tom describes himself as being on the “second mountain” of his career. The first mountain, for him and many others, is often about achievement, including building companies, gaining recognition, and climbing to the top of an industry. The second mountain, though, is about significance. It’s about giving back, mentoring, building community, and making a difference beyond oneself.

Tom encourages others to recognize when they’re at this inflection point and to embrace it. For advisors, investors, or really anyone, this shift can bring clarity, energy, and purpose. Success isn’t just what you’ve achieved, but it’s also what you help others achieve too.

2. Living Well Means Keeping It Simple

One of Tom’s guiding principles, both in life and investing, is simplicity. In markets, he believes simplicity leads to better results. This includes clear portfolios, low costs, and disciplined strategies tend to outperform complexity over time. He also notes that following ETF flows is a powerful way to gauge market psychology and better understand what investors are really doing.

In life, his version of simplicity shows up in daily habits and wellness routines. Tom has built a lifestyle that balances his professional impact with his personal health and happiness. He reminded me that living well isn’t about having more, but about enjoying what matters most.

3. Family First—With a Quarterly Meeting

One of the most creative and inspiring ideas Tom shared was his quarterly family meeting. Just like companies hold strategy sessions, Tom brings his family together to check in, talk about goals, and make sure everyone is aligned. It’s a simple but powerful way to strengthen family bonds, ensure communication, and create accountability.

In a world where we often get consumed by professional obligations, this practice is a reminder that true wealth comes from strong relationships at home.

Final Thoughts
Tom’s story is a great example of how investing well and living well are connected. His insights on the ETF industry remain invaluable—watching flows, staying disciplined, and keeping portfolios simple. But equally important are his lessons on life: know when it’s time to climb the second mountain, prioritize well-being, and never lose sight of family.

Thanks to Tom for sharing his wisdom, and for continuing to inspire both the investing community and those lucky enough to know him personally.
